Sorrowful Mary, Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

"Earth hath no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal."

Unfortunately we may have to wait
until we get to Heaven.

I love this card. It is so moving. Great quote too.

Jessica and Prayerflowers - Thank you for your kind words. I just learned something about this picture also. In Icon work, putting a "star" on Mary's clothes or headpiece, indicates virginity. I'm sure some icon masters out there could confirm this for me. Thanks all.

What a beautiful card, Micki, and the sorrow shown in Our Lady's face really is that of a mother's grief. Thank You.
Best Regards, Lynneda

There are supposed to be three stars, which represent her continuing virginity; before she was pregnant, when she had Jesus and afterwards. I'm nowhere near any reference materials.

Nan,
The three stars are supposed to be on the shoulders and above the forehead. We can see the two on the shoulders. It is not possible to see the third one, because the head is tilted back.

John, if you had read all previous comments, you might realize that rather than this card per se, I was talking about iconography of Mary, generally.

Lynneda - "Mother's grief"....oh how we can only imagine how sorrowful that was.

John and Nan - I think it's just interesting to know that the iconographers (is that the word?) have that artistic way of showing a message. I only just learned that myself. Thank you both.
